Shuttleworth College is to host the UK and Ireland round of the
international Tree Climbing Championships, testing the fitness,
stamina and skills of 40 competitors over two days (26-27
May).
Competitors armed with ropes and the latest
tree climbing equipment will scale trees to the height of 70ft in a
gruelling competition that will see 5 winners (male and female)
represent the UK and Ireland in the next round to be staged in
Germany in June. The final will be held in the USA in
Portland, Oregon in August.
Set in magnificent, mature parkland,
Shuttleworth College is the ideal setting for the international
competition with trees to test the best tree climbers.
Tom Bowen, Arboriculture
Instructor, explained:
“The world class competition is the
Olympics of the tree world and is seen as badge of pride in the
industry, testing competitors in 5 disciplines: Footlocking, Aerial
Rescue, Throwline, Speed Climb and the Work Climb.
“Hosting the competition will give
Shuttleworth College a lasting legacy as students will know that
our magnificent trees were climbed by tree masters.”
The International Tree Climbing Championship
began in the USA in 1975, preparing climbers equipped with nothing
more than a rope to have the ability to save a life in an aerial
rescue.
Now held in 20 countries around the world,
with over 1,000 contestants, the event has grown to promote safe
working practices, demonstrate innovations in equipment and
techniques, and provide industry recognition. The competitions have
resulted in products specifically designed for tree care
applications, benefiting safety standard, creating a new respect
for the role of the climber and a strong focus for the climbing
community to improve the work environment for all tree care
workers.
