A student of Shuttleworth College opens her
own floristry business after studying at the College for four
years from evening classes through to day classes and all whilst
still working full time.
Claire McGoldrick opened “Hello Flower” in
Arlesey in March, offering a personal floristry service to
customers who want to celebrate special occasions such as weddings
and birthdays, or simply pop in to buy flowers. The idea is
to delight customers and Claire is determined to do just that.

Shuttleworth College opened the doors to
Claire's dream to start her own business in floristry. After
achieving HND in Marketing and Business Studies at Bedford College
she went on to a successful career in marketing but always had a
dream of starting her own business in floristry. She began
studying Design and Craft in Floristry at evening class and went on
to Level 2 Diploma in Floristry for two years, one day a
week. She is now studying Level 3 for a further two years to
gain knowledge of advanced designs, including European design
styles.
Claire explains:
“It is a joy to study here in the absolutely
beautiful surroundings of Shuttleworth College and with expert
guidance and support from tutors. It is hard work, especially
when working full time, but worth every second.
“With Level 3 I could also qualify to teach
floristry in the future and this would give me so much satisfaction
- teaching students who would like to go into the florist
industry. I cannot thank my tutors Elizabeth Williamson and
Anne Pugh enough for their continued support and encouragement -
they are both inspiring tutors with a wealth of knowledge.
“Shuttleworth College offers the best in
outdoor and active education and all within spectacular
grounds. It is a privilege to study here.”
Anne Pugh, Floristry Course Manager,
added:
“We have seen Claire's skills grow from
strength to strength since she started studying with us at evening
class 4 years ago. Claire's new business is sure to be a
success with the winning combination of marketing, business and the
floristry skills she has developed.
“Claire is an example of the success that
students can achieve from studying at Shuttleworth. We offer
floristry courses for the complete beginner to the more advanced
and give people the chance to study in the evenings, or day
courses, part and full time. Students go on to careers in
floristry, set up their own businesses or use their skills
personally for their own pleasure and delight.”
2011 promises to be a life changing year for
Claire who also marries partner Mick in September. She says
“Mick has been incredibly supportive of my studies and in the run
up to opening the business. And I have the added bonus that
he likes flowers!”
“Hello Flower” opened on 5 March at 66 Hitchin
Road, Arlesey, SG15 6SA.
